Just Playin' While Travelin'

We are traveling for the rest of the month and while I knew I would go into withdrawal if I didn’t have some paper crafting to do (I miss being able to enter challenges, etc.), I never know what to bring. It always seems as if I pack the wrong stuff and there’s no way I’m going to try to brave the horrendous traffic by the University to go to Michaels to buy what I ALREADY have back home. So… I asked my friend Janice, who ALWAYS takes something with her when she travels, what would she recommend. Well, she steered me to two YouTube videos, one by Jennifer McGuire and the other from a blog called Joggles, where there is a video on creating backgrounds using alcohol inks and deli paper (I need to find deli paper somewhere...)

Anyway... I packed relatively lightly: several kinds of paper/card stock/tags, my Copic Markers, my Inktense Pencils, a white pen, a Tombow blending pen, a water blending pen, some stamp sets, stamp cleaner, a pair of CutterBee scissors, an acrylic block and my Misti (which really isn't performing as well as I had hoped...)

I started playing around about three days after we arrived here in Florida. I decided to try the Jennifer McGuire technique first. It involved stamping in white ink on colored stock and then “shading” with a white pencil. I used  Heartfelt Creations background stamp called “Bella Rose Lattice” (HCPC 3396) in Color Box “frost white” on various colors of Graphic45 6x6 “Patterns & Solids” (4500694). After selecting one in a kind of rusty brown color, I used my Inktense “antique white” (2300) for the shading of the flowers and leave, leaving the trellis untouched.
Picture
I have several more sheets of this card in different colors, as well as a few refolded cards from DCWV “Card Stack” (Earth) similarly stamped so I might try this again in a few days. Here’s hoping that pencil holds its point because I didn’t bring a sharpener with me! AAACK!

While I had that Heartfelt Creations stamp out, I stamped two manila tags with Archival “Jet Black”. On the same day I played with the shading, I colored in one of the tags using Inktense pencils  (“antique white” 2300, “ink black” 2200, “apple green” 114, “teal green” 1300, “leaf green” 1600, “tangerine” 103, “poppy red” 0400,and  “cherry” 0510) and a water blending pen:

I will reserve the other tag for playing with Copics…

Challenge: One Layer

2/10/2016

The Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge for February 10,2016 is to create a card that "Looks like one layer" Apparently we can "add die cut pieces and embellishments but the front of the card should look like one layer"!

Given that I am on the road right now and have a limited collection of supplies with me, a true one layer card is definitely what I should be aiming for. But I decided to try to stretch myself by a) using a stamp set new to me; b) using a Tombow blending pen, and (c) using Inktense pencils on a colored cardstcok.  Truly a one layer card but with something new (to me):

Picture
It seems to me that the bird on the right is quite shocked at was is being told to her by the bird on the left! Certainly fits with the sentiment, in my opinion!
Products used in creating this card were:
  • Stamps: Dina Wakely Media Stamps "Scribbly Birds on Branches" (MDR46080)
  • Inks: Inketense Pencils:  sea blue (1200), antique white (2300), sun yellow (0200), baked earth (180)0, tangerine (103), poppy red (0400), ink black (2200); Archival jet black
  • Papers: DCWV card stack 5.5" x 8.5" "Earth" (CM-012-00005)
  • Special Tools: Tombow N00 acid free blending pen; MISTI

I also want to enter this in the Creative Carte Blanche Challenge "Try Something Artistic Your've Never Done Before" in that I'm using materials never used before (the stamps and the Tombow pen), coloring with pencils on colored card stock, and using limited supplies while traveling --- all new to me!

Challenge: Have a Heart

2/4/2016

The Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge for February 3, 2016 is “Have A Heart” The Design Team was getting all lovey dovey and adding hearts to their creations. With Valentine’s Day in a few days, they were thinking of all those we love and making something special for them.

I had a scrap of white yardstick on which I had applied Victorian Velvet Distress Paint through the “Scribbles” stencil when I was making the February Tag of the month. I took that scrap and added more stenciling, “Hearts” in “Candied Apple” Distress Ink.
Picture
I followed up with Ranger texture Paste Transparent Gloss through the “Flourish” stencil and put it aside to dry.
Picture
The paste is cloudy when applied but clears as it dries.
Meanwhile, I stamped a Stampington % Company heart stamp in Versamark on red Bazzill card and heat embossed with detail white embossing powder. I then fussy cut this heart…
Picture
A PSX sentiment was stamped in “Abandoned Coral” Distress Ink on a small white tag. (I actually stamped the same sentiment on both sides of the tag, not sure how I wanted to position it, and I eventually trimmed the tag down as well).

Picture
Once the Transparent Gloss texture paste had dried, and was clear, I used a blending tool and “Abandoned Coral” Distress Ink over the entire piece and then wiped the texture clean, leaving color on the background where the texture paste was not.
Picture
I layered this finished background, offset on a piece of Maja Designs 6x6 paper, trimmed to fit a 5 1/8 x 7 card front, and blended on more “Abandoned Coral”.
Picture
Invariably, I either cut the piece crookedly or I place it crookedly. Never fails...
Final assembly was attaching a strip of red ribbon with embossed hearts and a strip of white lace down the side of the card, overlapping the tag/sentiment. Next, using foam dots, I place the fussy cut heat. Final, using Glossy Accents, I attached red squint for a bit of bling.
Picture
Products used in making this card were:

  • Stamps: Stampington & Company “Medium Ruffled Heart” (P2099) and PSX “Helen Keller” sentiment (F-2843)
  • Stencils: “Scribble” (THS 036), “Hearts (THS 016) and “Flourish” (THS 032)

Challenge: Fabulous Flowers

2/2/2016

Hero Arts has issued a challenge for the month of February called Fabulous Flowers. The project is to represent dreams of spring, featuring at least one flower and at least one Hero Arts product.

Hey, I thought, "I can do that!" I have LOTS of Hero Arts floral stamps from way back! So I dug through my stash and located several candidates, selected two and went with it.

Now i know that this doesn't LOOK like flowers, but the stamp set is called "Rainbow Blossoms" (LL 840) and the three stamps I used were "Field Flower Blossom" (E2756), "Wildflower Blossom" (E2757)  and "Poppy Blossom" (E 2754). They are wood-mounted stamps and, for all I know, retired, but they are flowers and I like their look. So...

I inked each stamp using Distress Markers and misting them with water to make a water-color look. I stamped the three stamps on a strip of white card stock, scribbled an outline on each stamp using a Pigma Micron pen in Archival black, layered the strip on  mustard colored card, and stamped a Hero Arts sentiment ("Special Things You Do", F 2459) of a similar vintage.

So my entry in the Fabulous Flowers Challenge:

  • Inks: Distress Markers "Abandoned Coral", "Wilted Violet", "Twisted Citron", "Mermaid Lagoon", "Fossilized Amber"; Distress Ink "Fossilized Amber; Pigma Micron Archival black pen

Challenge: Ray of Sunshine

The Simon Says Monday Challenge for February 1, 2016 http://www.simonsaysstampblog.com/mondaychallenge/?p=4157 is “Ray of Sunshine”. We are to make a card reflecting summer in some way… and they are featuring Dina Wakely products this week as well.

I started with a slice of glossy cardstock on which I had smooshed shades of purple and grey inks.
Picture
I stamped a Dina Wakely “Scribbly Bird” in Archival Ink
Picture
and then enhanced the colors of the bird with Distress Markers
Picture
For the sunshine, I used a sunny yellow slice of Bazziil card, cut to size, on which I stenciled some floral branches, all in springy and summery green.
Picture
I stamped a sentiment from the Dina Wakely “Scribbly Birds” set in Distress Ink, layered the yellow card on Color Mates card and then again on a prefolded ivory card
Picture
I fussy cut the bird and attached him (male birds sing, you see, so it  MUST be a him) with foam dots. I then used a rub-on for the music he is singing.

Products used in making this card were:

  • Stamps: Dina Wakely “Scribbly Birds” (MDR41320)
  • Stencils: “Blossom” (THS 031)
  • Inks: Distress Inks: “Wilted Violet”, “Hickory Smoke”, “Twisted Citron”, “Peeled Paint”; Distress Markers “Wilted Violet”, “Hickory Smoke”; Archival “Jet Black”
  • Papers: Bazzill Monochromatic Yellow; Color Mate “Dark Outdoor Olive”, refolded ivory card base
  • Embellishments: Idea-ology Remnant Rubs “Botanical” (TH 93119)

12 Tags of 2016 - February

The February tag in Tim Holtz’ 12 Tags of 2016 is a remix of two previous tags: the mono print technique spotlighted in the June 2104 tag http://timholtz.com/12-tags-of-2014-june/ and the embossed texture paste technique showcased in the March 2015 tag http://timholtz.com/12-tags-of-2015-march/.

In this tag, Tim showcased one of his new products: the mini-layering stencils. While I have a great many stencils, all of mine are the full-sized ones and, since I use smaller tags than Tim, my techniques come out looking radically different. Still, I had the basic products this time (wonder how that happened? LOL) and set about creating a red-and-white Valentine tag using the two techniques.

First I created my base tag, smoothing a white tag in a watery solution of “Old Paper” and Picket Fence” Distress Paints
Picture
Then, I created a mono-print using the “Scribbles” Stencil and Victorian Velvet Distress Paint (a prefect side-effect - I now have a piece of white card with the scribbles stenciled in Victorian Velvet for use in a future project!)
Picture
For the embossed texture paste technique, Ranger Texture Paste was applied through the “Arrows” stencil and  then red/gold embossing powder was sprinkled on while the paste was still wet.
Picture
I put the tag aside to dry while I worked on another challenge and on the embellishments. I stamped a heart in “Barn Door” Distress Ink on white card, fussy cut it, and layered it on Bazzill monochromatic red card. (Later, I darkened the red mat and the word “Forever” with “Fired Brick” Distress Marker to enhance the contrast)
Picture
I applied Picket fence Distress Paint to an ideology Word Key, wiped the key clean, and added “Barn Door” Distress Paint to eh key edges. A piece of red twill ribbon was attached to the key
Picture
Once the texture paste was dry, I heat embossed the texture paste
Picture
and then applied “Candied Apple” Distress Ink through the “Hearts” stencil in random corners (forgot to take picture here...). I attached the key and ribbon with Miracle Tape (ribbon) and “Glossy Accents” (Key). I then attached the layered heart using foam dots.
I colored three heirloom roses with “Watermelon” Alcohol Ink and blotted them dry. Using “Glossy Accents’< I attached the roses to the bottom right of the tag in a cluster, and finally, strung more of the twill ribbon through the hole in the tag:
Picture
Products used in making this tag were

  • Stamps: Inkadinkado 96133-J
  • Stencils: “Scribbles” (THS 036), “Arrows” (THS 025), and “Hearts” (THS 017)
  • Inks: Distress Paint: “Old Paper”, “Picket fence”, Victorian Velvet”, “Barn Door”; Distress Inks “Candied Apple”, “Barn Door”; Distress Marker “Fired Brick”; Adirondack Brights Alcohol Ink“Watermelon”
  • Embossing Powders: Commotion “Poinsettia” (161369)
  • Embossing Paste: Ranger Texture Paste
  • Papers: Bazzill Monochromatic red; Paper reflections medium tag; scrap white card
  • Embellishments: Idea-ology “Word Keys” (TH 92680), “Heirloom roses” (TH 93210); Red Twill Ribbon scrap
  • Adhesives: Miracle Tape from Viva Las Vegas; “Glossy Accents”, EK Tool 3D Foam Dots; Ranger Collage Glue Stick
