Challenge: Alcohol Ink

8/30/2018

The Ellen Hutson Essentials Challenge for August 2018 is to use Alcohol inks.

Now I have a folder full of experiments with alcohol inks from WAY back! I don't even remember what inks I used but I do know that they were Ranger. This was a cut of gloss-white card stock using shades of pink and purple:
Picture
I thought I'd try the new Ranger Alcohol Lift ink pad on this old background, not even sure if it would work on ink that had been dry so long. I pulled an Ellen Hutson "mondo" floral stamp, inked it up and applied it --- EPIC FAIL! There was apparently some residual Archival ink on that stamp from a previous use and all that happened was the Alcohol Lift ink activated the black ink (and possibly ruined the ink pad???):
Picture
A very effective way of leaning that stamp of Archival ink, though...

I abandoned the lift technique and went with the now-stamped image...  I trimmed the piece to card-face-size, stamped a sentiment in Versamark, and embossed it with detail gold embossing powder:
Picture
I used a fine-tip gold marker pen to embellish the anthers in the flowers:
Picture
It was still terribly dark, however, so I used a puddle of Ranger Alcohol Blending Solution and a fine-tipped brush to pull some of the color from the main floral image and mounted the panel on an ivory notecard. I edged the ivory card with the same fine-tipped gold pen...:
Picture
Now I need to see if I can salvage the Alcohol Lift Pad and try again with some fresh alcohol ink backgrounds...

Products used in the making of this card were:

  • Stamps: Essentials By Ellen “Mondo Sakura by Julie” (EESTJ-082-18)
  • Inks: Archival “Jet Black”; Ranger Alcohol Inks (unknown colors) and Alcohol Blending Solutions; Versamark; Snowman Fine Tip “gold”
  • Embossing Powders: Top Boss “Detail Gold”
  • Papers: Paper Studio Notecard “ivory” (225219); gloss white card stock
  • Adhesives: RedLine 1/8” Embossing Tape

Challenge: June Color Trend "Verdure"

7/9/2018

The Ellen Hutson June 2018 challenge "Verdure" uses the following color palette and photo inspiration montage:
Picture
I elected to CASE the Wisteria image but I used the "Mondo Hydrangea" stamp and die sets instead.  I used nearly all of the colors in the palette to create my backgrounds.

I started with backgrounds on watercolor paper, one in three shades of green and one in two shades of purple and one of blue. I smooshed the watercolor paper through Distress Oxide Inks smeared on my craft pad (and misted with water):
Once dry, I used a blending tool and blending foam with one color of Distress Oxide on each to fill in the white spots and even out the color a little:
I repeated the process using shades of yellow and pale green on a pre-folded white notecard. Left is after  smooshing; right is after blending:
I stamped the hydrangea flowers in a dark blue Archival Ink on the purple panel and the hydrangea leaves in a dark green Archival Ink on the green panel. I die cut the images, using the coordinating die set and assembled them on the card front. I used Nuvo Glitter Drops for the flower centers and Archival "Jet Black" for the sentiment:
Picture
Products used in the making of this card were:
  • Stamps: Essentials by Ellen "Mondo Hydrangea by Julie" (EESTJ-028-16) and "Hello Gorgeous by Julie" (EESTJ-011-15)
  • Dies: Essentials by Ellen "Mondo Hydrangea by Julie" (EEDIEJ-040-16)
  • Inks: Distress Oxides "Peeled Paint, "Forest Moss", "Bundled Sage", "Broken China", "Wilted Violet", "Seedless Preserves", and "Fossilized Amber"; Archival "Cobalt", "Library Green" and "Jet Black"; Nuvo Glitter Drops "Honey Gold"
  • Papers: Paper Studio notecard "white'; Ranger Watercolor Paper
  • Adhesives: Wendy Vecchi "Perfect Card Adhesive" (WVA62134)

Challenge: Pantone Floral Fantasy Color Palette

6/17/2018

The Ellen Hutson Pin-Sights Challenge for May 2018 was to use the Pantone Floral Fantasy color palette and/or three photographs in that palette for an inspiration for a card using an Essentials by Ellen product.

Picture
I went with four colors in the palette and the Aurora Borealis photo as my inspiration. I started by making a "galaxy background" blending Distress Oxide Inks, edging with Distress Ink and spritzing with a "Picket Fence" Distress Marker:
Picture
I stamped three "circles" and a collection of dots from the Essentials by Ellen stamp set "Bokeh Dots" in Hero Arts "Unicorn" Pigment Ink - circles which were meant to represent spiraling galaxies or planets or star clusters or ...
Picture
Since the circles faded slightly when dried, taking up some of the background color, I doodled on them with a Signo Uniball white gel pen and a Wink of Stella "Silver" brush... I also added a few gel pen dots in the background for more prominent stars. I added a sentiment and some stars from the Hero Arts My Monthly Hero set of August 2017, stamping in Versamark and heat embossing in white:
Picture
I trimmed the card to fit and mounted it on a prefolded purple notecard:
Picture
Products used in the making of this card were:
  • Stamps: Essentials by Ellen “Bokeh Dots by Julie” (ESTJ -002-14); Hero Arts My Monthly Hero Kit August 2017
  • Inks: Distress Oxides “Squeezed Lemonade”, “Warm Lipstick”, Wilted Violet”, “Bundled Sage”, and “Black Soot”; Distress Ink “Black Soot”; Distress Marker “Picket Fence”; Hero Arts “Unicorn”; Signo Uniball  “white” gel pen; Versamark
  • Embossing Powders: Top Boss “white”
  • Papers: Ranger Watercolor Paper (ISW39532); pre-folded notecard “purple”
  • Adhesives: RedLine 1/8” Embossing Tape

The Mix-It-Up Challenge for February, 2018 on the Ellen Hutson blog asks us to use both Essentails by Ellen and Hero Arts products in a card.

I started by stamping a large background stamp by Hero Arts in Distress Oxide "Wild Honey" to a yellow card base.

Picture
Next, I stamped thistles from the "Thistles by Julie" stamp set in Distress Oxide "Peeled Paint" and "Wilted Violet" over the background:
Picture
I stamped over the thistle images using a Paper Smooches sentiment stamp in Archival "Jet Black":

January 2018 Pin-Sights Challenge

1/28/2018

The photo collage/color inspiration for the January 2018 Pin-Sights Challenge on Ellen Hutson's blog is as follows:
Picture
The colors? The patterns? The images? The shapes??? Whatever speaks to us in this photo is what they want us to be inspired by! I decided on the flowers and the color purple.

I started with 12 x 12 patterned paper by Crafter's Workshop that depicted a quilt top with embellishments. It comes in several colorways and I selected the ones called "Violet" (which contains the three purple shades at the bottom of the color palette) for the card base and the flowers and "Pine" (which included a color similar to the green, second from the top in the color palette) for the stems and leaves.

To start with, I attached a 5 x 7 int cut of the "Violet" paper to a pre-folded kraft card base of the same size:
Picture
I took a scrap of the Violet" and stamped and heat embossed "Mondo Hydrangea" flowers in white. I used a scrap of the "Pine" and stamped and heat embossed stems and leaves from the same stamp set, also in white. I used Sunflower Enamel Accents to color the centers of each flower. I then used the coordinating dies to cut out the different images and layered them on a piece of white card cut slightly smaller than the card base.
Picture
I stamped a sentiment from the same stamp set in Altenew Crisp Dye Ink "Midnight Violet", edged the white card with the same ink, and attached it to the card base:
Picture
Products used in the making of this card were:
  • Stamps: Essentials by Ellen "Mondo Hydrangea" (EESTJ-028-16)
  • Dies: essentials by Ellen "Mondo Hydrangea" (EEGIEJ-040-16)
  • Inks: Versamark; Altenew Crisp Dye Inks "Midnight Violet"
  • Embossing Powders: Top Boss "White regular"; Ranger Wendy Vecchi Enamel Accents "Sunflower" (WVES7970); Altenew Crisp Dye Ink "Midnight Violet"
  • Papers: Paper Studio "rat" notecard (697201); Crafters Workshop Quilt Complements collection "Violet" and "Pine"; Neena "Solar White"
  • Adhesives: Distress Collage Medium; RedLine 1/8" Embossing Tape

Over at the blog for Ellen Hutson, there is a phot/color palette challenge extended in the last week of each month.  The rules require that an Essentials by Ellen product be used and that the project produced use as inspiration any of the photos or colors from the palette provided.  For October, 2017, the inspiration is:
Picture
Since my Essentials by Ellen stamps and dies are not holiday themed, I opted to use the color palette provided and came up with this VERY non-traditional watercolored Christmas card:
Picture
Products used in the making of this card were:
  • Stamps: Essentails by Ellen "Mondo Peony by Julie" (EESTJ-034-16)
  • Dies: Essentails by Ellen "Mondo Peony by Julie" (EEDIEJ-046-16) and Sizzix Thinlits "Vintage Tidings" (661605)
  • Inks: Altenew Crisp Dye Inks "Ocean Wave", "Dusk", "Firebrick", "Sunkissed", "Orange Cream". "Frosty Pink", "Ruby Red", and "Coral Berry"
  • Papers: Ranger Watercolor Paper (ISW39532); Die Cut With A View Textured Card Stack "Classics"; scraps of white, metallic gold and metallic steel cardstock
  • Adhesives: Ranger Collage Glue Stick; Xyron 250 and 500 sticker makers

I'm also entering this card in the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge, October 25, 2017: Anything Goes
