Just Playin' with an old Tim Holtz kit

11/7/2018

Some time ago, I purchased a Tim Holtz "Christmas Photo Stand" kit and it's been sitting in my to-do box ever since. If there were ever instructions, I mislaid them, and I had issues with parts of the kit too:
  • the tree shed like crazy;
  • once sprayed, it would NOT let me glue the baubles to the tree,
  • it wouldn't stand in the jar
  • and I had no clue what to do with the bell that was included.
So...

I sprayed the tree with three colors of Glimmer Mist. I cut a piece of foam and stuck the tree into the foam so it would stand (made it a tad tall so positioning in the jar became an issue), and instead of gluing the colored baubles to the tree, I aded some white ones to the jar and mixed the colored ones in with them.

Just Playin' - another Tim Holtz Kit

Back in July, 2016, I played with three Tim Holtz "kits" which demoed various techniques using different Distress media. Well, there's a new kit on the market and it can now be obtained from more sources online, so I ordered one and finally got around to playing with it yesterday.

This kit is the Distress Ink Kit and contained tags, a mini-mister, a blending tool and some foams, and three mini-ink pads as well as an instruction booklet:

Not that it is anything new, but it always helps to practice. And I did! I ended up with three tags. From left to right, they are:  "blending" and "Spritz & Flick", the first two lessons; the second lesson "Monoprint" and the third lesson stamping which  included three stamping techniques (regiular, smudged and watercolor):

The products I used in this session included:
  • The Distress Ink Kit (TDK45786)
  • "Leaf Prints" (CMS273)

Just Playin' ... with Tim Holtz Kits

I saw that Tim Holtz had some kits on sale at Hobby Lobby and ordered them online. They arrived the day before our trip to Louisville so I decided to take them with me to pass the time in the hotel room.

The first kit I tried was theDistress Mixed Media Spray Stain Kit (TDK48190) which came with everything one needed to try out four techniques. I set up the tiny side table in our room with a couple of pafgee from the Friday USA Today paper, a to-go cup form the coffee tray in our room and a craft sheet:

Picture
Awkward since the table was lower than the chair, the chair was deep but not set up for leaning over the table, the table legs were in the way, and there was barely room to craft. Still, when the crafting muse calls, one makes do!

I did four techniques using the supplies provided. From left to right: Spray Stain Background, Stenciling and Monoprint, Texture Paste, and Mixed Media Background:

Continuing on, I took out the Distress Crayon Watercolor Kit (TDK48206) and set up my little table:

Picture
The result was four sheets of watercolor cardstock. From left to right: Blending (top row, and an epic fail --- I need practice) and Blending )bottom), Direct Watercolor, Palette Watercolor, and Watercolor Background:

I cleaned up for the day and came back the next day to try out the Alcohol Ink Kit (TDK48213)
Picture
As you can see, it was a sunnier day on Saturday!

Anyway, I did four sheets of glossy card stock with the product provided. From left to right: Agate, Monoprint, Ombre, and Plaid:

I had issues with out the archival ink stamped on the backgrounds --- it tended to bible and leave blank spits. Need more practice there as well.

I recommend this little kits. They are a great way to practice a number of techniques you might not have thought of when using Distress products.

Holiday Merriment Assemblage Clock

11/30/2014

In November 2014, Tim Holtz put a kit for an assemblage clock onto his ETSY site which sold out i less than 4 minutes! I had been stalking that site for 24 hours and was one of the lucky ones to score a kit! It's been sitting in my craft space for the last few weeks, calling my name so, yesterday, when my friend Mary was busy crafting away on the table opposite me, and I had finally finished my Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge 16, I finally caved and got out the pieces and worked on the clock. I have to admit that I didn't follow all the directions exactly (I didn't have easy access to a power supply so I avoided use of a glue gun (which meant a lot of sticky fingers covered with layer upon layer of "Glossy Accents" while holding pieces together until the "glue" dried!) and had to trim a quarter inch off the big tree (because it kept toppling over when I inserted it in the clock!). Still, I do like how it turned out!

The photo takes a little away from the depth of the piece --- it really looks great lit up with that lantern and all that glitter (which is also all over my craft space now! My how that stuff travels!).
