Compendium of Curiosities 3 - Challenge #18

12/20/2014

Linda Ledbetter of Studio L3 and her design team have posed Challenge 18, all about Tim's "Pocket Pages" as shown on Page 36 of Compendium of Curiosities 3 (If you buy this book, you can see Tim Holtz's approach yourself.). Would you beleive, the challenge is more than half-way through now? Anyway, this part of the challenge is sponsored by The Funkie Junkie Boutique, who, along with TIm Holtz and Mario Rossi, are offering prizes to winners of this challenge.

As usual, one of the rules of the challenge is to not disclose the techniques described in Compoendium of Curiosities 3, but, since this challenge more more about using a product than actually altering it, and since I am not a scrap-book/album maker, I winged it. Had a brainstorm last night --- I knew that there were at least three years of old Christmas cards in our basement storage room and it seemed to me that they would make a nice little "coffee table booklet" if I could discern a theme from among over 200 cards. Well, after pouring through all three years (and locating the address of a long-lost friend in the bargain), I determined that I would do a holiday greeting featuring cats! All kinds of cats: real cats, painted cats, cartoon cats...

I set about creating a cover using heavy card stock, a Christmas card too large to fit in the pockets, and a greeting cut from yet another card. I cut the cardstock to slightly larger than the pocket pages, punched holes to match up with the holes in the pocket pages (I used Tim's tiny hole punch), and scored the card so it would open easily. Snowflake-shaped brads acted as binders:

Then I fussy-cut pictures on various cards, matted when needed, and fit them into each pocket of four pocket pages. I mined my stash for paper scraps for mats, and for stickers and borders to add some sparkle. Not very "Tim-like", I fear...:

No, I don't "know" any of these cats. Many were from cards received from various humane societies and shelters I support. Others were from people who know we own three cats of our own.

There are already a few cat cards in this year's card basket so it might be that this gets added to, year after year. On the other hand, this might foretell my future as the crazy cat lady of our community!

I'm so glad I clicked on yours; I just love the cat theme! I also get a lot of cat-themed cards for the holidays, my birthday, etc. as I have four. What a great idea to recycle your cards and put them to beautiful use! BTW: the English teacher who lives inside me (she can be such a pain!) wants me to tell you it's "pored" not "poured."

Thanks for sharing your lovely book! I am motivated to make a book about the newest member of our cat family, Junipurrr (she's the only one who doesn't have one yet)!

Blushing! As another grammar geek (who used to irritate the heck out of her biology class students by insisting on proper capitalization, punctuation and spelling), I totally understand your inner English teacher! and apologize. I have been using this spelling improperly all my life and never knew! And I can't even blame computerized auto-fill or spell check! It was ALL me! Eeek!
