Challenge: Anything Goes

9/29/2016

Another "Anything Goes" challenge, this time from Simon Says Stamp Wednesday, September 28, 2016. SO I checked my stash and found three project "kits" that had yet to be opened. After careful consideration, I decided to open the July box from Simon Says Stamp and work with the materials in it, although I did not go with the suggested patriotic themes. I just decided to go without a pre-conceived theme/layout and just let the card design itself!

My first step was to create a top-folding card for a pre-folded note card by trimming it down to fit the papers in the box. I then cut a half-inch strip of striped paper and created a border:

I had seen this done with some effect on cards on some designers' blogs and decided to go ve it a try myself.

Next, I sorted through the 6x6 Tim Holtz motif resist cards in the box and selected the honeycomb one. I used a mini blending tool and three distress inks to color in this background after trimming the card to fit the note-card from.

Clearly, this calls for a honeybee so I pulled out my Layered Bee BIGZ die and texture fade and set to work on a piece of scrap yellow card. My first attempt, braying "Blakc Soot" Distress Ink onto the embossing folder was a total fail so I did it again, and this time, used a "Black Soot" Distress Marker to add the black touches to the bee:

In order to let the bee sand out against the yellow background, I cut another bee, this time from a black card scrap, and layered the bee slightly off angle to create a drop shadow:

OK, a dilemma! All yellow: background, bee... so what have red and white stripes to do with this? I decided to mute the effect of the red by adding a strip of red tape to the top of the card and strips of yellow and orange to the seam between the honeycomb and the stripes: Then I glues the bee to the background:

The stripes were still too stark and I decided that it was the white, not the red, that was at issue. I pulled out my blending tool and "Scattered Straw" Distress Ink and colored over the striped border. I then took another black card scrap, and  using Versamark and yellow embossing powder, best embossed a sentiment and glued that to the card...

Products used in the making of this card were:

I love the way your card evolved, Carol, especially since the supplies came from a patriotic kit. Thanks for playing along with us at the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday challenge!
