- Stamps: Altenew “ Eid Greetings” and “Ramadan Greetings”
- Inks: distress Inks “Cracked Pistachio” and “Ground Espresso”, Distress Marker “Cracked Pistachio”
Yet another “Anything Goes” challenge for October 28, 2105 over at Simon Says Stamp Wednesday. I had two stamp sets from Altenew that I wanted to try out and I decided to combine them to create a greeting card for our Saudi Arabian friends for the festival of Eid (it’s too late for this year - Eid al-Fitr was July 18 while Eid-al Adha was September 23 - but maybe next year?). I stamped an Arabic calligraphy stamp from the “Eid Greetings” set in “Cracked Pistachio” on ivory and added some visual interest with a mosque image from the “Ramadan Greetings” set. I also stamp two lantern in green from the “Ramadan Greetings” set. I mounted the card on green (a sacred color in Islam) and then again on an ivory pre-folded card. The Work It Wednesday Challenge for October over at Simon Says Stamp is to make a thank you card. I decided to go with a collaboration stamp/die set from Stamptember 2015. I stamped the taffy rolls in three colors of Distress Inks on five sheets of Authentique 6x6 papers, added some “Vintage Photo” and Picket Fence” marker to “shape” the candies, die-cut and stacked them and stamped the greeting that came with the set: Products used in the making of this card:
The Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge for October 26, 2015 is “Throwback”. We are to pick a challenge we would like to repeat or maybe we missed one and we would like another chance to try it out! Since there were two weeks of challenges in June 2015 (“Rpyal” and _“For the Love of Plants” ) that I was unable to participate in since I was in a hotel in Atlanta without supplies or tools, I decided to try one of those. I settled on “For the Love of Plants” (June 8, 2015), and decided to mix it up with a seasonal card… I stopped a scene, using three different conifer stamps and the Distress Ink “Pine Needles”. A little wash of “Tumbled Glass” on the snow and a spritz of “Sparkle” created the winter scene I was looking for. I then die-cut the word “peace” in blue card stock, mounted the pine tree scene on dark green card and then on a “Russian Sage” card, and added the sentiment to the op right corner. A bit more spritzing and: Products used in the making of this card:
Week 365 of the Sunday Stamper Challenge over at Ink on my Fingers is “Freedom”. We are to make a little something; a card, canvas, ATC, a piece of altered art and add some stamping, and then comment on the blog with a link. Easy peasy — except what exactly connotes “Freedom” to me? I didn’t want to go the route of Independence Day or the “freedoms" specified in the Bill of Rights (and so willingly abused by our citizens). Sooo... after some mulling about, I decoded I would go with freedom to move about, to travel, to explore new places. Something that I wish I had the money to do, but … I stamped some images in Archival “Jet Black”, colored them with Distress Markers and a blending brush, spritzed a few clouds with shimmer spray, and fussy cut them before layering on a “Russian Sage” prefolded card base. I then stamped words with Color Box “Frost White” on black card (run through my Xyron to create stickers), embossed with clear embossing powder, and added them to the card front as well to create my sentiment. The Frilly & Funkie Challenge for October 21, 2015 is "Something Wicked"... Well, I had to admit that the first thing that came to mind was the "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this was comes" line which the second witch says in "The Scottish Play". However, I don't have any witch stamps (how on earth did THAT happen) so I pondered on how to come up with something to represent my "spookiest work", when I don't really do "spooky"! Well, I settled on skeletons, which seems to me my theme this Halloween season, and since I had a background piece left over from my challenge card for another challenge last week ("Wilted Violet" and "Hickory Smoke" Distress Inks "smooshed" with water on the matte side of glossy card stock) , I decoded to do some "recycling" of scrap card stock and paper and also to reuse the stamp I used in that very same challenge, but with a twist: this time, the graveyard is front and center! I stamped the image (Victorine Originals) in Archival "Jet Black" twice on the background, using a stamp positioner, and then really darkened the black with a dry erase marker. I also stamped the same image on yellow (for the moon) and on white (for a "spare" tombstone profile). Also stamped on white in Archival "Jet Black" was the Inkadinkado stamp 97233-MM.
Now for the fussy cutting! I cut out the moon and layered it on the background. I fussy cut each skeleton and place them in the graveyard (the one on the left relaxing on his tombstone, the one in the middle lounging against the tree trunk, and the one on the right eising from his grave behind a his grave marker - the tombstone which I cut from the image stamped on white card stock and also darkend with the dry erase marker) . The sentiment now has "Buffalo Girls" running through my brain --- I was actually humming it as I sorted through my Snap Stamps Mini Formal alphabet set (00377) to create the words! This could be an invitation to a Halloween party (if I should ever actually give a Halloween party - NAH!)... Maybe no the spookiest, but it is as spooky as I get! The Simon Says Stamp Wednesday challenge for October 21, 2015 is to “Wrap It Up!” We have the choice of gift wrapping, tags, cards with ribbon/twine, or… I chose to make some more cards, very simple cards that could act as either greeting cards or cards attached to a gift. For all three, I cut a 4 x 4 inch square from colored paper/card scraps. I wrapped each “square” with ribbon and attached a tag to each. I then stamped a sentiment on a white card base and attached the “package” to the card. Voila! Three fast and simple cards! Here are the three I made: A red package using red/gold and dark green twisted twine (Berwick Brilliance), a tag from Hero Arts “Just Tags”, a Sentiment stamped in “Festive Berries” Distress Ink using the Santa Rosa stamp F2188, embellished with a Marvy Uchida Liquid Gold Pen A green package using a length of gold tinsel (a freebie from Quick Cards magazine), a tag from Hero Arts “Just Tags”, a sentiment stamped in “Pine Needles” Distress Ink using the Hero Arts stamp F2307, embellished with K & Co “Christmas Cheer” stickers (569317) And a blue package using white Affray Ribbon, a tag from hero Arts “Just Tags”, a sentiment stamped in “Blueprint Sketch” Distress Ink using the Santa Rosa stamp D1813, embellished with a Stampandous “Snowflake Silver” sticker (AC619S)
The Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge for October 19, 2015, was to “think of all things spooky and ghoulish“ (or, if we had a huge monster of a project that we would like to finish, that would qualify as well). Well, I don’t have a paper crafting monster unfinished project and I don’t think my needlework qualifies so I went with incorporating into a card “things ghoulish” (not sure I’d claim “spooky” since, as a biologist who taught both comparative and human anatomy for years, skeletons are not really spooky to me, but I suppose they are to others not similarly trained)… I didn’t take photos along the way as fussy cutting doesn’t lend itself well to step-by-steps, but I can share how I created this card.
First, I stamped the plainest of Simon Says Stamps “Sugar Skulls” (SSS101571) onto white card, using Archival “Jet Black” ink. I then cut out the eyes and nose, and “aged” the skull using a blending tool and “Old Paper” and “Vintage Photo” Distress Inks.. Using the die that came with the stamp set, I cut out the stamped skull, one more plain white skull, and three black skulls which I layered, using the Ranger Collage Glue Stick. This gave the skull some “pop”… Next, I stamped the skeleton from the “Poisonous” stamp set (CMS171) on white card with Archival “Jet Black”, aged it as I did the skull, and fussy cut it as well. I ran a scrap of purple card through my Big Kick using the Texture Fades embossing folder “Poison Labels” (660973). I selected three of the best labels from the eight I did, trimmed them, blended “Black Soot” Distress Ink over the raised areas and filled in the depressed area using a Sigma Pen (“White”, UM-153). I cut a piece of metallic lavender paper to fit a grey/purple card base and began layering. Final step was the sentiment “Boo!”, stamped with Archival “Jet Black” and a Savvystamps.com stamp. This card is based loosely on a card made by igirlzoe for the Tim Holtz Holiday Inspiration series, 2015. As usual, when trying to work from memory, some bits got left out and others aren’t quite in the order she used. Also, I didn’t have all the supplies specified so I ad libbed in places. However… I started with die cutting. I die cut the “Birch Trees” (Sizzix THinlits 660994) and a “Grand Gothic Window” (Poppystamps 865) from white cardstock. I later found that I didn’t want to use the window fame as it restricted my “view” so, instead, I cut another gothic window from pale grey-blue Core-dinations card: I ran the blue gothic window through my Big Kick with the Texture Fade “Sparkles” (661001), sanded it lightly to give the sparkles some tooth, inked the sparkles with Color Box “Platinum” pigment ink and heat embossed with WOW! “Metallic Silver Super Fine” embossing powder: Next, I laid down “Picket Fence”, “Stormy Sky” and “Mermaid Lagoon” Distress Paints on my craft mat, spritzed them with water, and drew a piece of white cardstock through to create a background. When dry, I stamped two rows of trees, using “Treeline” (CMS244) and “Bundled Sage" and “Forest Moss” Distress Inks: I blended “Old Paper” Distress Ink onto the birch trees, added some shadow lines with an “Old Paper "Distress Marker and a fine tip water pen) and layered the trees and the gothic window: Then I added the background and trimmed to fit: I die cut a sentiment from metallic gold cardstock using the thinlets “Holidays” die set (660979), layered this card face onto dark grey-blue card and then onto a prefolded card base and added the sentiment: Not nearly as clean and elegant as igirlzoe's example but I now know where I went wrong and if I attempt another version, I will correct for my errors!

The Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge for October 14, 2015 is “Color Inspiration”. We are to use an inspiration board provided by Design Team member Jenn Shurkus as our guide: These said Halloween to me, especially the witch against the moon and the purple sky behind the run down mansion! So I chose the following Distress colors to go with the inspiration board: from left to right, “Carved Pumpkin”, “Hickory Smoke”, “Wilted Violet” and “Gathered Twigs” and set about creating a Halloween card. First, I stamped a JudiKins pumpkin in Archival “Jet Black” on Distress Water Color Paper. I then water colored with four orange Distress colors (“Ripe Persimmon”, “Spiced Marmalade”, “Carved Pumpkin” and “Rusty Hinge”) and one brown (“Gathered Twigs”). I then fussy cut the pumpkin: Next, I prepared a background for my card, by swiping a sheet of Specialty Stamping Paper through puddles of “Hickory Smoke” and “Wilted Violet” inks on my crafting mat, spritzed with water, and drying with my heat gun: I outlined my pumpkin lightly on the dried background so I could position stamps and, using my stamp positioned, I stamped various Halloween-themed images in Archival “Jet Black”. I also re-stamped the moon from the Victorina Originals stamp on scrap yellow paper so I could have a yellow moon against the stormy purple sky, and placed a strip of the same yellow behind the pumpkins eyes and nose: Next, I assembled the card, layering the moon, then the pumpkin on the background, trimming the background and layering it on matte black card stock, trimming the entire unit to fit a pre-folded ivory card blank. The final touch was sequins in purples and blacks/grays to add a touch of sparkle. Happy Halloween!
