Summer of Creative Chemistry 2016 - Week Nine, Day 6

8/7/2016

Dfabric SsdfThe final day of Creative Chemistry 103, Surfaces & Substrates, didn't demonstrate any particular technique. Rather, it described the variety of surfaces/substrates available for mixed media art. We were challenged to take one (or more) of these surfaces and use with a technique from one of the other five days of classes.

One of my favorite tags was the Texture Paste Embossing  from Day 3: Distress Mediums & Textures. I wanted to see how it would work on fabric so I selected a scrap of burlap from Tim Holtz' "Testured Surfaces" (TH93204) and cut a thin strip of denim from the Tim Holtz "Textile Surfaces" (TH93294) and adhered them to a #8 manila tag. Using the technique from Day 3, I applied Texture Paste and embossing powder ("Cobalt" from Creative Beginnings)  - embossing powder wanted to stick to the adhesive in the burlap... and let the tag dry. Once dry (took a while because the fabric seemed to soak up the moisture in the paste), I heat embossed the tag.

I loved the enamel look on the coarse burlap and smooth denim. But it needed something "more" so I tinted some Prima Flowers (Pura-Alexa) with "Broken China" Distress Marker and attached them with Glossy Accents:

If you are a fan of the Distress Line of products as designed by Tim Holtz, you cold do worse than sign up for the three Creative Chemistry classes on Online Card Classes! It is as good as signing up for one of the rare courses Tim Holtz teaches around the country;  in some respects, even better because you feel as if you are getting individual instruction! What is more, once registered for the classes, you have lifetime access to the videos and pdf lesson plans! Can't go wrong, in my opinion. (and this is an unsolicited recommendation for both Tim's classes on the Online Card Class site, as well as other classes they offer --- I have taken five other classes from them and all are excellent!) Just sayin'!

Love the one stencil over two types of fabric.

How I love the look of this embossed on the burlap. Unfortunately I have a day job which means I have to curtail my creative chemistry attempts to the weekends :(. I got a new stencil yesterday, used the same technique on it but I am getting embossing powder all over the place. Not just on the paste.. it sticks to the linen. May I ask how you were able to keep your pattern so clean?

Many thanks for sharing your lovely tag!

I had issues woth the denim... The fabric wicked moisture from the paste and the EP stuck to that moisture too. I did what Tim said NEVER to do - i flicked the back of my tag! Not sure it helped that much but if you look closely, there is white showing through the EP on the denim side. I think, to be safe, In future, I would add the EP through the stencil, much like I would with glitter. It would protect the background better.

Oh thank you Carol :) I was so eager to get going with a brand new stencil (you know... like a child in a toy shop!) that I forgot that little bit of putting the powder on while the stencil was still over it. I have to go over all these classes again and make notes. These are such brilliant classes with SO MUCH information! It keeps my head buzzing for days after! Going to try this version now. Thank you so much!!
