Challenge: Opposites Attract!

5/7/2016

Over at Frilly and Funkie, the design team has set a challenge that really had me thinking this week: Opposites Attract! We are supposed to create a vintage frilly or funky card in the style OPPOSITE our usual style, using a color palette not our normal...

My problem is I'm not sure what "usual" or "normal" is. I'm pretty sure I don't fit well in any category as I am prone to switch out often, trying new colors, styles, etc.

I'm not a "frilly" person in real life (hate ruffles and pink and jewelry and the like) and have only done a few frilly cards for challenges (maybe two for Frilly & Funkie and two more for other challenges might truly be called "Frilly", with flowers, laces, bling, ribbons and such. As for 'Funky", I'm not even sure what that is - the dictionary called it: " 1. different but cool/nice 2. a bad smell". I'm pretty sure the team doesn't mean smelly (although some of my cards have been known to "stink" in an alternative sense of the word!) so I guess I COULD fall into the different but nice area, although I rarely am "vintage... After mulling this over for three days, I settled on my style opposite to be "Frilly".

Now, for color not normally used. Again, I tend to go in spurts, having favorite color schemes that I repeat ( blues and greens; purple, green and yellow; reds and oranges;  etc)  but I don't "stick" with any particular
scheme for any real length of time. I usually let the image I am using and my mood at the time of stamping to set the color (and this often is a result of a suggested palette from a challenge). I try to stick with either monochromatic or analogous schemes, although I have been known to use complementary schemes now and again. What I do find is that I tend towards saturated colors --- pastels usually don't work for me (although, again, there have been exceptions). So, I decided on a complementary scheme of pastels, which was dictated by a recent purchase of Prima flowers (several of which were glittery and more had rhinestone centers, for added bling)!

My basic color pairing is pale pink with an accent of pale mint green. I searched out scraps that might work (I selected a bubble-gum pin, a pink plaid and a pale pink mottled and shiny card with darker, almost maroon swirls, as well as some mint green card scraps) and cut them up and layered them on a square top-fold (aa shape and format somewhat unusual for me) palest pink (almost white, from the Bazzill mono reds packet) card. I  played with angles and multiple layers to get my final base.

I cut a sentiment three times from the green card (which I had run through my Xyron 500) using the thinlits die "holidays". I chose the word "joyful" but cut off the 'fun" part and layered the three dies to add some thickness to the sentiment.

Finally, I placed flowers on the card front using Multi Medium matte and EK Tools 3D foam dots.

I really appreciate your thoughtful approach to this challenge! It was fun to read your thought process in the post. The end result is a lovely color palette and a pretty Frilly card! Well done, you! Thanks so much for sharing with us in the Frilly and Funkie Opposites Attract Challenge!
