Challenge: Count Me In

3/30/2017

Frilly & Funkie Challenge Blog's challenge for March 29, 2017 is "Count Me In": "Numbers are a huge part of our everyday lives so it is no surprise they are also often included in our creative ones too. For this challenge you need to use your choice of numbers to add that special 'sum-thing' to your vintage or shabby chic project. Make them count as part of the design, not just a last minute addition!"

I had used numbers as a background for the March Creative Carte Blanche Challenge but I suspect that numbers as they were used there would not count as that special something. I decided to go a different route and use my "number" as the main point of my card. So I set out looking for a number and found a whole lot of them in Tim Holttz's Idea-ology set Alpha Parts - Numeric. But which number... and as I counted them out, that nasty little ear-worm, that sometimes strikes, struck and I had it: ONE! The ear-worm? The finale from "A Chorus Line", which I saw at least three times in San Francisco even before it opened on Broadway! That finale gives me goosebumps every time I hear it!

In case you are one of those souls who may have never seen "A Chrous Line", here is that finale, and the picture on that web site gave me my color scheme as well! My approach was to use stamps and stencils in the way they might not have been intended (at least not as they were seen my me!)...

I started with the top hats that each member of the chorus line wore. I used the "Undertaker" stamp set for the hat, stamped in Versamark and heat-embossed in Gold on black card stock. I fussy cut it, removing the skull and keeping only the hat, and added a band made from scrap gold shimmer paper. I put in the accent marks with a fine-tip black pen:

Now, for the background --- all shimmery and gold and black. I started with black card and the "Rays" layering stencil and Distress Oxide "Fossilized Amber". Once dried, the oxide took away from my need for gold, so I over-inked through the stencil with Distress Ink "Fossilized Amber". And then I over-inked again with Versamark and heat embossed with gold:
To begin on my focal point, I created a background using three Distress Oxide Inks on Distress Mixed Media Heavystock:

I turned the above background over and stamped a splash shape several times (I used Archival Ink but any ink would have done - all I wanted was an outline to follow). I paid more attention to the final outline than the actual image. I then fussy cut, resulting in an irregular "splash" or "flash" shape for the front of my card:
Time for final assembly. I layered my black and gold background on a white notecard:

I placed my "splash" and my top hat in the center of the rays:
I added my Idea-ology number and a heat-embossedgold  phrase from the lyric on black card:

Such a cool card, I love how you used the Tim Holtz rays stencils and the back of the stamps to create the pop comment shapes, really clever. Thanks for joining us for the "Count me in" challenge at Frilly & Funkie.
