The mini-challenge for the More Than Words design team this month is to use the word "Love" in a card, tag or ATC. Since I am making cards this year instead of ATCs, I was looking for something in a background stamp that was appropriate for their challenge. When I came across (previously unused) Stamping' Up! "Word by Word", it was perfect. I differentially inked the stamp using Archival "Jet Black" on the majority of the words and Distress "Candied Apple" on the word "Love". As usual, I had the same issues I always have with wood-mounted background stamps: incomplete images, so I filled them in with a "Black Soot" Distress Marker. I then searched my ephemera and "'cover" stashes and found these four die-cut red hearts (freebies from a recent the Funky Junky Boutique order) which I thought went perfectly with the card: Products used in the making of this card were:

The More Than Words Mini-challenge for January 2017 is to use the word "One" on a card, tag or ATC. In the past, I have made ATCs for this challenge but I decided to change gears for 017 and make a card. I created a background on colored card using "Picket Fence" Distress Marker and four different Tim Holtz Layering Stancils that featured numbers. I then fussy cut a quote from the Graphic 45 "Typography" collection and highlighted the word "one" with a"Fossilized Amber" Distress Marker. I backed the background with ivory card and attached it off-center on a top-folding white notecard. I backed the saying with ivory and black cardstock, and attached it to the lower left card front. I used "Antique Linen" Distress Ink blended around the edges of the white card to take off the contrast and embellished the card with some burlap-and-lace flowers. I am also entering this card in the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge for January 25, 2017: Anything Goes".

Over on More than Words, the mini-challenge for September is to create a tag, card or ATC which displays the word “Enjoy”. I wanted to play around with different media for this ATC and tried using a self-adhesive canvas but… my die simply would not cut through it and I REALLY wanted to use this new die so… I went back to my old standby ATC blanks (manufacturer unknown) and picked out two — one a textured old gold metallic and the other a matte bright orange. I used one of Tim Holtz’ mixed media thinlits dies on the orange card (after running it through my Xyron 500 sticker maker — I have found that having that adhesive on first makes assembly SOOOO much easier and less messy!). I stuck the die-cut card on the metallic card and set about creating embellishments. First, I die-cut two copies of the word “Enjoy” — one in shimmering white and the other in matte black. I layered them, slightly offset so it looked like a drop-shadow, and adhered that to the ATC base. Then I selected five small shite paper flowers with wooden bead centers and adhered them to the card. Products used in the making of this ATC were:
The August mini-challenge on More than Words is to use the word "BEST" The critical rules are that the word has to be visible on the project and that the project has to be "small" (i.e, a card, tag or ATC rather than a layout or a larger art piece). It's been a rough few days around here and I wasn't really in a crafty mood but I had an idea for clean-and-simple ATC. I stamped a floral image (inked with Distress Markers) three times on white card and a word stamp ((Inked with Archival Ink) over them. I colored in the letters with the markers and, when dry, rubbed Distress Micro Glaze over the images. I then applied diluted Distress Stain with a brush to create a wash background. Finally, I added Glossy Accent dots to each of the "flowers" on the card: I tried this three times with different stamps and colors but this is the one I liked best.

The More Than Words blog has posted it's July mini-challenge for 2016. To enter, one must create a card, tag or artist trading card (ATC) prominently displaying the word "Fun" as part of the composition. To make my ATC for this challenge, I used a number of dies that had just arrived in my mail to depict some "Fun in the Sun": Products used in making this ATC were:
The mini-challenge (June 23, 2016) over at More Than Words is to use the word "Art" on a tag, card or ATC. I found this statement made by the novelist Thomas Berger, in Being Invisible (1967), misattributed to Saul Bellow on many web sites (and by me on this ATC): "What is Art But a Way of Seeing?" My ATC background is a splatter effect using Color Bursts and a stamped image from La Blanche: I found some chitchat stickers that provided MOST of the qwors, and added an embossed "seeing" to complete it. Over at More Than Words, the mini-challenge for the month of May is to use the word “Time” on a card, tag or ATC. I took the word literally for my ATC this month and collected all the images I could find in my stash of clocks and timepieces of all sorts and sizes. My first step was to use a mini-layering stencil of “Clockworks” and blend “Black Soot” Distress Ink through the stencil onto a metallic silver ATC blank. Next, I stamped four timepieces onto white card, using Versamark (embossed in gold) or Archival “Jet Black”. I also stamped my word, cut from a sentiment, onto white card in Archival ink and matted the word onto gold metallic card. Finally, I tinted the back of a mustard-colored brad with "Fossilized Amber" Distress Paint, and inserted it in the BACK of an Idea-ology clock face, to create “hands”. I assembled my ATC by layering all the pieces and then trimming to fit: Products used in creating this ATC were:
On the More Than Words blog, which hosts a monthly challenge requiring at least one word to be featured, there is always a "mini" challenge set up on the accompanying Facebook page for small projects like ATCs, cards and tags. This month, the mini-challenge is to use the word "Fly".. Now I had just finished a card for another challenge which featured butterflies and the word fly so I didn't want to repeat myself. What else could support such a word? Dragonflies? Birds? Airplanes? None appealed to me. And then I thought of my stash of "flower fairy" stamps which I've never used because they are so detailed and so specific. But fairies fly, don't they? Only one of my "flower fairy" stamps was size-suitable for an ATC-sized project: The Lavender Flower Fairy. So I stamped her in Archiva "Jet Black", fussy cut her away from all the lavender plants, colored her with Distress Markers and mounted her with foam dots to a purple ATC blank. A purple feather (cut to fit), a few sequins and an ideology sticker completed the ATC card: Products used in making this ATC were:
The More Than Words Mini Challenge for March, 23, 2016 is to create a card, tag or ATC card featuring the word “Happy” I’m making ATC cards for this series of challenges and decided to go simple and relatively “clean” for this entry. I first attempted to use my new ShadowPress Station and Shadow Press embossing folders on a River City Blank Deck of playing cards, using “Fossilized Amber” Distress Ink to highlight the word happy. After wasting six blanks (why don’t instructions come with more than small fuzzy photos and no words in these tools, anyway? This ShadowPress Station was NOT intuitive to me) I finally figured it out, sort of. I suppose practice will make perfect but I used a die cut mini bird crazy and some pearl stickers to hide the flaws in this final attempt. A stamped hashtag sentiment and matting with a yellow ATC card base completed my entry: Products used in making this ATC card:
A new blog/Facebook combination “More Than Words”, has replaced the long-admired Scrap Around the World which closed in late 2015. This new blog is administered by some of the original Design Team and Admin Teams of Scrap Around the world; and is offering a monthly “Main Challenge” based on a word and a creative challenge (open to layouts, canvases and art journals) and a word-based “Mini-Challenge” (open to cards, tags and ATCs), the latter hosted on their Facebook page. The rules for both challenges can be found on the blog and the specific challenge for January can be found here where the specific word that must be visible on the project is “Be”. I don’t scrapbook, rarely of canvases and never journal so the main monthly challenge is out for me. t I do make cards and occasionally tags; I haven’t done any ATCs is a while and it seemed to me that this challenge lends itself well to that format. So I determined that I could qualify for an entry in their mini-challenges. I searched out my ATC blanks and product which will fit that size and got stamping! I found one stamp set that had a sentiment including the word “be”, which is the only requirement other than size required in this challenge. I felt like playing with color (an acidy green-yellow and a sea blue) and dimension on this ATC, something I normally couldn’t do if I had to send it through the mails. I stamped the sentiment in Archival ink and used a blending too and the same ink to color the torn edge of a piece of Authentique paper. I also used Archival Ink to color the Prima frame, adding a touch of Distress Marker (“Salty Ocean” ) after the ink had dried. Another Distress Marker (“Squeezed Lemonade”) was used to color the petals of a Petaloo flower and touches of “Salty Ocean” were added to the pistals of the flower.
